Updating WinPatrol

Exit your current WinPatrol before running the new wpsetup.exe!

If you already have WinPatrol, we recommend you install this new version in the same folder you're currently using and preserve your settings. If you choose to Uninstall your previous version of WinPatrol you must reboot before installing the new WinPatrol.

PLUS members make a note of their PLUS Name and Registration code and should download the newest free version to upgrade. This information is displayed when you click on the PLUS tab. In most cases, WinPatrol will auto detect that you're a PLUS member but if you've forgotten your code Email your name to support@winpatrol.com and we'll send you your code.

Running WinPatrol

When you run WinPatrol, you should notice that Scotty the Windows Watch Dog is standing on your Windows System Tray/Taskbar in the right lower corner of your screen. Probably next to your clock or speaker icons. He loves music.

Just double click on Scotty to see the valuable information he has found out about your computer. If you hold down the right mouse button you'll see a menu pop up with additional features. Using this menu you can select to have Scotty installed so he's always watching out for you. You can always go back at any time and change your mind and uncheck the "Always Run WinPatrol" menu option. This menu also provides a way to Exit WinPatrol anytime you want.

Windows XP users have the ability to hide inactive icons. If you use this feature Scotty may disappear because he appears to be sleeping. You should set WinPatrol to "Always Show" so the menu is always available to you. Even if you don't see Scotty he will still be on patrol based on your settings.

Removing WinPatrol

Uninstalling WinPatrol works like any other Windows programs that follows guidelines from Microsoft.

If you see the Scotty icon in your system tray just right-click on the Scotty icon to display the WinPatrol menu.

To exit the program select Exit Program and WinPatrol will stop monitoring your system.

To Remove WinPatrol completely from your system go to the WinPatrol Control Panel and choose the Add/Remove Programs applet. This applet provides a list of currently installed programs including WinPatrol. Just click on WinPatrol and follow the Uninstall instructions. WinPatrol will be removed and will no longer start each time your computer is rebooted.

Solving Install problems

Typically, any install problems can be fixed with one of the following solutions.

1) Make sure you have room on your hard drive. All setup programs require extra space to uncompress files.

2) Download or Save the wpsetup.exe program to your hard drive and run it locally instead of opening it from the web page.

3) Use the classic, Reboot Windows and try it with a fresh system. For some reason this actually solves the problem more times than anything else.

4) On multi-user machines it's recommended you are logged with an account that had administrative rights.

"Error 403 Forbidden" when trying to download WinPatrol setup program.

This issue has been known to occur when the Internet Temp Folder is too full. We've also seen problems trying to use the IE's right-click context menu when this folder has too many files.


1. Run Internet Explorer, on the menu Tools, select Internet Options.
   
2. Click Delete Files, and then click OK.
   
3. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

We also recommend reading the following support document from Microsoft. There have been reports of some spyware removing this file to prevent programs like WinPatrol from deleting it on reboot. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
